Privacy Policy

Jotter (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is a personal finance tracking app developed by The Cosy People. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app collects, how it is used, and your choices regarding your data.

By using Jotter, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

What Data Stays on Your Device

The core of Jotter is designed around on-device storage. The following data is stored locally and is not sent to our servers:

Expense records — amounts, names, categories, dates, and need/want classification
Recurring expense schedules — frequency, amounts, and due dates
Custom categories — icons, names, and colours you create
Profile information — your display name and profile photo
Savings goals and budgets — target amounts and progress
App preferences — currency, language, theme colour, notification settings, and haptic feedback preferences

This data is stored using Apple’s Core Data framework on your device.

iCloud Sync

If you are signed in to iCloud on your device, your expense data syncs automatically across your Apple devices via Apple’s CloudKit service. This sync is managed entirely by Apple and is subject to Apple’s Privacy Policy. We do not operate any servers that store your expense data.

You can disable iCloud sync for the app in your device’s Settings > Apple Account > iCloud.

Analytics (Firebase Analytics)

We use Google Firebase Analytics to understand how the app is used and to improve the experience. Firebase collects:

Usage events — which features you use (e.g. adding an expense, viewing charts, applying filters), but not the specific content of your entries
Aggregated financial data — expense amounts are included in analytics events to help us understand spending patterns at a population level (e.g. average expense size). This data is not linked to your identity.
Device information — device model, operating system version, and app version
Performance data — crash reports and app responsiveness metrics

Firebase Analytics is operated by Google and is subject to Google’s Privacy Policy. Firebase assigns an anonymous installation identifier to your device; this is not linked to your name, email, or Apple ID.

We do not use advertising identifiers (IDFA) or track you across other apps or websites.

Purchases and Subscriptions (RevenueCat)

As of version 1.5, Jotter is sold as a one-time paid download through the Apple App Store. Apple handles the transaction; we do not receive or store your payment details.

We use RevenueCat to manage purchase and subscription state on your device. When the App launches, RevenueCat is assigned an anonymous installation identifier and may process:

Your anonymous App Store transaction identifier (once you have made a purchase)
Purchase or subscription status (active, expired, or cancelled)
Entitlement information (which features are unlocked)

Customers who purchased a Jotter subscription before version 1.5 continue to have their subscriptions managed through the same system. Those subscriptions renew and cancel through your Apple ID as normal.

RevenueCat does not receive your name, email, or Apple ID. For more information, see RevenueCat’s Privacy Policy.

Widgets

Jotter includes Home Screen widgets that display your spending summaries. Widget data (today’s spending, budget progress, weekly totals) is shared between the main app and the widget extension via a shared app group container on your device. This data does not leave your device.

Push Notifications

If you grant notification permission, the app schedules local notifications on your device (e.g. spending reminders). Notification content is generated locally and is not sent through any external server.

Data We Do Not Collect

We do not collect, store, or have access to:

Your name, email address, or contact information (unless you email us directly for support)
Your Apple ID or account credentials
Your location data
Your photos (except the profile photo you optionally set, which stays on your device)
Banking, credit card, or payment instrument details

Children’s Privacy

Jotter is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

Data Retention

Your expense data is stored on your device and in your personal iCloud account. We do not maintain copies of your data on our servers.

Analytics data collected by Firebase is retained according to Google’s data retention policies. You can reset your analytics identifier at any time by reinstalling the app.

Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you
Delete your data — you can delete all app data from Settings > Data > Delete All Data at any time
Opt out of analytics — you can limit ad tracking and analytics collection in your device’s Settings > Privacy & Security
Request information about what data we process

If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the right to access, rectify, port, and erase your data. If you are a California resident, you have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know, delete, and opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell your personal information.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the app or by updating the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
